Top Ten Skin Care Myths
An essential part of the esthetician’s job is to educate clients on skin health, skin care products, and the numerous cutaneous, therapeutic options available. While most consumers have become increasingly well-versed in products (antioxidants, ingredients) and treatments (lasers, fillers, spa therapies), a number of myths pervade the marketplace. Sometimes, the myths are so prevalent that they trickle up to the skin care therapist’s level, becoming part of the accepted and common skin care wisdom. This article lists 10 skin care myths that recur in the minds of both skin care consumers and skin care professionals.

Cool It!
‘Chilling’ the Ayurvedic Way
Summer is here and with it the sun, the surf and more exposure to the elements of the great outdoors. It could be a season of extra dryness or, just the opposite, highest humidity for any of your clients. But, no matter where you are, summer usually means more heat, and for some, a lot more heat. Standard skin care concerns center on sun protection and hydration or treatments designed to make us look better on the beach, but Ayurveda looks at care for yourself and your skin in another way.

How Deep Is Your Clean?
A double-cleansing method
Modern life is just rife with irony. Today, we keep our breath fresh with evil-looking strips that dissolve on the tongue. We deodorize several parts of our bodies with many different, anatomically specific deodorants, and we ward off germs with tubes of antibacterial gel we carry in our handbags. Yet—and here’s the irony—most of us are walking through the world with dirty skin.

Uh - Oh...
What to do when something goes wrong
Panic. Pass out. Leave the room. Get another job. Abandon your career. These are some of the things that we may feel like doing when something goes wrong. After all, we are the experts and our clients, who want us to make them beautiful and provide them with relaxation, put their faith (and their faces and bodies) into our hands. But when there is an “uh-oh” or an “oops,” the customer freaks out, and so do we!

Mellowing Out
Help spa clients get into the zone.
The word “spa” is usually associated with “relaxation.” And it should be no surprise that 70 percent of clients want and expect their spa visits to induce relaxation and reduce stress. But, not all clients are “relax-able.” They come into the spa stressed and anxious; some are even “difficult” because of pent-up stress. What is the problem? And, how do spas bring these clients to a level of relaxation where their experience can be remembered as pleasant?

Hydrotherapy Worldwide
International roots and history
Ancient civilizations from Rome to Turkey used water for therapeutic purposes. The word spa and its modern concept originates from the Latin words sanus per aquam, which means “health through water treatment.” The use of water to heal and relax is etched so deeply in human history that almost 2,000 years after the fall of the Roman Empire, the word “spa” still coins the meaning of a place where one can find relaxation.

At-Home and In-Spa
Breakthroughs in peel technology
The emergence of the superficial, lunchtime skin peel occurred in the early 1990s and became popular by the mid-1990s. The next wave of newer skin rejuvenation techniques, including microdermabrasion, non-ablative laser and light therapies, hit the market shortly thereafter and temporarily dampened the enthusiasm for topical skin peels. As time goes by, however, and the “newer” techniques begin to age, the appeal of superficial peels is increasing once again. Why? Because superficial chemical peels consistently provide real, measurable benefits to skin. They work. And, they are customizable to meet the needs of all clients, and enhance outcomes and overall satisfaction when combined with other cosmetic procedures.

Pigment Problems
Questions and Answers
One of the characteristics of beautiful skin is even pigmentation. Skin that is all one color is indicative of a youthful-looking complexion. Pigment splotches and skin mottling are early signs of sun-damaged, “aging” skin. Different forms of uneven skin pigmentation are common esthetic problems that estheticians see all the time. These problems with pigmentation are referred to as dyschromias and the most common form of dyschromia is hyperpigmentation.

Peel Away Summer-Stressed Skin
Nine Steps to Chemical Exfoliation
Fall is a transitional season for skin. As temperatures and humidity levels begin to drop, there is less moisture in the air to hydrate skin and keep it looking supple. A fall complexion also wears the remaining signs of summer’s toll: dull, lifeless skin brought on by excessive exposure to heat, humidity, pollution and ultraviolet radiation; and hyperpigmentation that stubbornly remains when the tan has faded away. All this distress on the body’s largest organ signals a need for rejuvenating skin back to its pre-summer condition.

Goodbye Cellulite
New Spa Treatments Reduce Those Unsightly Lumps And Bumps
Of course no one wants cellulite. No matter how slender you or your clients are; the amount of exercise you partake in or how closely you watch your diet, you could still have it. Unfortunately, there is one physical phenomenon that almost no one is safe from: Cellulite – the unsightly dimpling of skin also known as orange peel, cottage cheese skin or saddlebags.
While many factors contribute to the build-up of cellulite, such as lack of exercise, poor circulation, unhealthy eating, pregnancy, aging, medication, genetics, smoking, stress and toxins accumulating in your body; these fatty deposits and toxins are present in almost all females regardless of body shape or size. In fact, approximately 90% of women have cellulite today. Luckily for men, they generally don't have this problem because of their fiber makeup, which prevents fat deposits from bulging up as easily.
So, if most women have it, is there anything you can do about it for your clients? Many people fail to do anything about their cellulite because they believe there is either nothing they can do about it or that it’s simply fat. The truth is that there are actually a number of treatments in which your salon, spa or clinic can employ to help to prevent and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

The Esthetician’s Mission
7 ways to make sure you’re back on track
Many of us never think about the deeper meaning of our work as estheticians. We spend our time literally touching people! In our touch-phobic society, sometimes our touch is the only time someone is touched at all. I invite all estheticians to adopt these simple principles of self awareness to be able to give the very best to those we touch and contribute to the healing of our world. Use the following checklist to keep focused on your holistic mission.

The Home Care Advantage
Massage therapists and retail.
Estheticians have long struggled with selling home care, and many skin care salons and spas have made recommending and selling a training focus. The struggle is being won, as most estheticians now realize that encouraging clients to take home products has positive results for everybody involved. The clients meet their goals more quickly, are much more likely to return (and more often), and the estheticians and spas make more money.

Spa Treatments and Cancer
Know the limits and possibilities.
More than 2,000 years ago, Buddha predicted that during the time period in which we now live, there would be an increase in degenerative diseases and mental problems. Whether you acknowledge this or not, most people would agree that it is hard to find a family that has not been touched by cancer or some form of mental problem that has required medication. As a nation, we are living longer, but not necessarily living healthier. Spa treatments are becoming more and more popular, so it stands to reason that we are potentially seeing more clients who are or have been seriously ill. Are we as an industry ready for such a trend, or are we at least educating staff to be ready?October 2006

The Essentials of Oils
Skin care made naturally
Essential oils contain hundreds of chemical components, most of them in very small amounts. They are a mixture of alcohols, ketones, phenols, linalool, borneol, terpenes, camphor, pinene, acids, ethers, aldehydes and sulfur. They also contain vitamins, hormones, antibiotics and antiseptics. No synthetic reconstruction can fully replicate a pure essential oil. Essential oils are natural, but natural doesn’t mean that they are automatically safe or that clients won’t have a reaction. In fact, essential oils are potent and must be used with caution.

These two reactions in the body are responsible for several types of damage and aging in the skin. Newly discovered skin care ingredients harness the power of science and Mother Nature to offer the ultimate in skin preservation.
